The Department of Foreign Language has 3200 students, which makes it the largest department of foreign language in China. Currently, the department offers three college diploma education programs including English Language Teaching, Business English (i.e. International Trade, International Business, and Translation) and Tourism English. English Language Teaching has been identified as the "Advanced Program" of Guangdong Province. The Department enjoys a staff of 96 full-time teachers, of whom are 3 PhDs, 76 Masters of Arts, 5 professors, 17 associate professors, 39 lecturers, and some 14 international teachers. About 60 teachers have been sent to countries like the USA, the U.K., and Canada for further study, training or exchange programs. Professor Mao Sihui, a noted expert in Comparative Culture, is now also a Mentor for Ph. D. students in Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS). Prof. Fang Jianzhuang, Prof. Zhong Shuneng (PhD), Prof. Luo Jianhua and Prof. Liu Baoan have worked respectively as Master supervisors in GDUFS, Sun Yat-sun University, and Guangxi Normal University. Professor Fang, Prof. Zhong, Doctor Lin Weisheng and Associate Professor Li Zhitao has been the core academic members in the "Backbone Principal and Teacher Training Project" of Guangdong Province. The department has achieved substantial success as to academic research in English teaching methodology, primary school English teaching theories and Primary school textbook compilng. It is one of the directing units for Guangdong English Teacher Education (college) Consultative Committee. Primary School English Teaching and Research directed by Associate Professor Lin Hong has been awarded Elite Course at national level, and some other courses at college level. In the past three years, the department has undertaken three research projects at national level and 14 at college level. 90 papers have been published in key journals in China like Chinese Translators Journal, Foreign Language Teaching and Research, Foreign Language, Foreign Language World, Foreign Language Education, Foreign Language Teaching Schools, etc. by teachers of the department, 100 in other ordinary ones. Some 20 textbooks and monographs have been published as well, like Let¨s Learn English, Guide for Chinese EFL Learners to Use the Right Word at the Right Time, The Teaching Methodology of Primary English, which makes the department a competent one in academic research among faculties of its kind or others. For many years, our employment rate maintains above 96%, graduates receive high fame in Guangdong. More than 20 graduates have continued to get PhDs in major colleges. Graduate like Bao Danghong has won the first prize in the 1st National Primary School English Class Competition; Zou Dongmei the first prize in the 2nd National Senior High school English Class Competition; many more people were honored National Model Teacher, the Gardener of the National Elementary and Secondary School; Zhang Lihua Excelled at simultaneous interpreting for the provincial leaders and foreign guests on important occasions; Lin Zhaohui was the first auctioneer registered in China, the first Chinese auctioneer to hold big auctions in the USA, and the first female judge of the National Auctioneer Certification Examination.
