Since its founding in August 2002, the Department of Pre-school Education has been adhering to the maxim of “well-versed in both Chinese and Western Learning, excellent in moral character and scholarly pursuit ”. With a total of 869 students, among whom 34 are from southeast Asia studying in the Chinese Class, the Pre-school English Education Program is the first of its kind at the college level to prepare English teachers for pre-school education. The program was recognized as the provincial model program in Guangdong in 2005. It also received a series of other public recognitions in the following years with its becoming the member of the Preschool Education Commission under the Teaching Advisory Board for Teacher Education Programs of Guangdong Vocational Colleges in 2007, chairing the Preschool Education Committee of the Primary and Preschool Teacher Education Commission of Guangdong Higher Education Association in 2009.

  The Preschool English Education Program
  This program aims at fostering all-around students equipped with updated preschool teaching theories as well as aesthetic qualities enabling them to organize the preschool classes, such as playing musical instruments, singing, dancing, and painting, and English proficiency enabling them to teach different subjects, manage the classes and carry out relevant researches in English.
  The major courses include Integrated English, Oral English, Listening, Extensive Reading, Oral English for Kindergarten Teachers, Pedagogy for Kindergarten English, Designing and Guidance for Kindergarten Class Activities, Pre-school Psychology, Preschool Education, Hygienic of Children, Modern Technology for Education, Piano, Dancing, Vocal Music, and Visual Arts.

  The Faculty
  The department has an outstanding faculty rich in teaching experience and competitive in academic research. More than 80% of the teachers have studied in such regions and foreign countries as the UK, US, Australia, Hong Kong. 41% of the staff are professors or associate professors. There is one academic leader, six backbone teachers, 6 experts in the preschool education, one with the title Guangdong Provincial Outstanding Teacher, and two candidates for the fourth “Elite Project” of the province. This team is also supported by visiting professors, international teachers, as well as part-time teachers.

  Achievements in Teaching
  The department has obtained the first prize in the 5th Guangdong Higher Education Teaching Achievements Awards, one provincial Elite Course, four projects of teaching research and reform at the provincial level, one enterprise-funded research project, seven research projects at the college level, and compiled six sets of English textbooks with 42 books, 10 tapes, 14 DVD, and 6 boxes of teaching materials for kindergarten math classes.

  Training Bases
  The department boasts two training bases at the provincial level, two at the college level and 36 off-campus training bases.

  The Passing Rate for Students Aptitude Certificates
  The passing rate is 95.21% for Certificate of Computer Application Aptitude, 96.50% for Practical English Test for College Students.

  The Self-taught Class for Bachelor’s degree of South China Normal University
  The department, in partnership with South China Normal University, gives classes to the self-taught students on weekends to help them pass the exam and obtain the South China Normal University bachelor degree for preschool education in addition to their college diploma for English.

  Distinctive Features
  The department inherits the unique teaching tradition from Guangdong Foreign Language Normal School, the predecessor of GTCFLA. It emphasizes on practice through module teaching, on native English through employing international teachers, on the basic preschool teaching skills through practicing and offering extra tutoring courses for students.

  Study-Education-Research Cooperation
  The department establishes a long-term partnership with more than 30 kindergartens in Guangdong in terms of teaching, research and students’ internship. These kindergartens are internationally well-known for their long histories and rich experience. Most of them are graded as Category A at the provincial level. The majority of those kindergartens are located in the Pearl River Delta cities, such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Shunde, where students can easily find internships on a regular basis.

  Exchange and Cooperation
  The department also carries out extensive academic exchange and cooperation with a host of academic institutions and organization. Besides, many prestigious experts home and abroad in the field of early childhood education are invited to make speeches on campus.

  Campus Life
  Living in a college rich in academic aura and pursuing the spirit of “diligence, decorum, discipline, devotion”, the students are provided with a platform to study, manage and develop autonomously. Under the teachers’ guidance, they set up all kinds of study groups where the members can help each other in their study and organize many extra-curriculum cultural and aesthetic activities to enrich their campus life.

  The Students’ Awards at the Provincial and National Level
  Year 2004, 15 students were awarded the bronze medals in the Art Festival for Guangdong Youth Amateur Group;
  Year 2005, three students were awarded the silver medals in the Dance Competition of Guangdong College Students Art Exhibition (Amateur Group); one gold medal and two silver medals in the Arts and Crafts Competition; five silver medals in the Chorus Competition.
  Year 2006, Wu Shuang won two gold medals and broke one record in the 7th College Sport Games;
  Year 2007, a third-year class won the title of “Provincial Outstanding Class” at the provincial level; the school dance team won the first prize in the 1st College Dance Competition in Guangdong Province and performed in the 8th National Ethnic Sports Meeting along with Wei Wei and Teng Ge’er, who are both very famous singers in China;
  Year 2008, the dance team awarded the second prize in the Dance Competition of the 3rd College Culture and Art Festival in Guangdong;
  Year 2009, Chen Yanli was awarded the gold prize in Group A for the Young Contestants in the Chinese Zither Performance in the 9th Hongkong “Gold Bauhinia Flower Award” Music, Dance and Art Competition;

  Employment for the graduates
  The students enjoy bright prospects and could engage themselves in teaching, research and other preschool education jobs in such working places as kindergarten, the administration department in the preschool education institute, and other education institute of all kinds. With the employment rate standing at 100%, the department has produced 933 kindergarten teachers, over 70% of who have been playing an active role in the preschool education sector in the Pearl River Delta. Since last year, the graduates have been reaching out to a more extensive job markets and landing their jobs in such places as Shanghai, Macao, and South East Asian countries.
  The Preschool Education Program is enjoying an increasingly higher status and reputation in the society, with its graduates well-acclaimed among the employers and the positive reports of their performances by a bunch of leading mediums in Guangzhou, such as Yangcheng Evening News, Nanfang Daily, and Information Time. The five-year program enjoys a positive enrolment, with the number of applicants increasing on a yearly basis, the registration rate standing above 90%, and the quality of students remarkably enhanced. For instance, a total of 347 students apply for the 70 seats, a rise of 122 students or 55% over the last year. This positive enrolment is a strong evidence of the quality of the department and its popularity in the society
